HappyFamily Leopold

HOW, oh HOW, could I pass up illustrating this family and their car!? When I was a teeny bopper (as in a 16 to 18 year old) I dreamed of driving an old 60′s Mustang (instead I drove an ’88 Oldsmobile Cutless Sierra). I didn’t know a thing about old cars— let alone Mustangs—except that they were completely awesome! And so I read this entry and I KNEW it would be a riot to create an illustration with this concept! And I PROMISE you… IT WAS!!

Check out their entry:

Where are you from? We live in College Station, Texas.
Tell me a brief summary of each member of your family (name, age, hair/eye color, personality). *
Hi, I am Laurie (mom), blonde hair, blue eyes. I am an RN, but my ‘real’ job is COO of our family. I am a list maker, schedule keeper and taxi driver.Doug (dad), brown hair, hazel eyes. Doug owns an auto body shop. His real passion is the restoration of classic cars and fabrication of custom hot rods.Brett (newest teenager) 13, brown hair, hazel eyes. Brett is a very accomplished Boy Scout. His current interest are football and golf. He does love working with his dad and loves cars as well. He is outgoing, polite, and very caring.

Zach (dare devil) 10, sandy blonde, blue/hazel eyes. Zach is funny, shy, silly, and loves to make everyone laugh. He is all about having fun. Zach loves art, gymnastics and just being outside.

The 3 to 5 prominent colors I would like in my piece include (be specific—ie. “royal blue” rather than “blue”, or “light celery green” rather than “green”):* Colors I like are wine, or deep ruby red, dark royal blue, and grey or silver tones.
Is there a career path you would like to include in an illustration * I would love to incorporate our business and love of cars. Specifically, a classic Ford Mustang. Doug is currently restoring a 64 fastback.( I can send in pics of his car if you do choose to illustrate our family).
Tell me what you would like to see your family doing (would you like them just sitting all together posing, as if for a picture? Or would you like them to be doing something together). Please supply the most details here: * I would love to see something with cars. Specifically a ’64 Mustang, fastback. I can imagine a setting at a park with Doug (dad) and Brett (13) near the car, me, (mom) on the grass, and Zach (10) hanging from or climbing a tree. So, more of a casual snap shot of us having fun.
Any other details you might be able to give me that would help ensure your enjoyment of the piece:* If you do go with a park setting my favorite type of flower shapes are gardenia and gerber daisy

Laurie and family, THANK YOU for introducing my work to another new color palette. This is one of the most exciting things about what I do! Finding a new palette! (Seriously nerdy, I know. But I LOoooVE it!) And thank you for letting me stare at your beautiful car all day! Oh yeah, and your beautiful family too! ;) I sincerely had soooo much fun with this piece.

I don’t know…. I think I might possibly have the best job in the whole world. (*Thank you God!*) Thanks again for making my day, Leopolds!!

xox,
Katie

p.s. Random fact: This was my 60th HappyFamily illustration!! CRAZY!! THANK YOU OOHMOONIES!!

    Katie,

I am just excited, pleased, and so happy beyond words. The BEST part is you have our teenager driving a car none of us are allowed to get too close to…I can’t wait to make our Christmas cards, frame a large print to showcase in our home, and just plain show off this beautiful piece of artwork! The original picture I sent you with my application was our Christmas card from last year. The caption was “May your Christmas be a Classic”, since Doug’s business is called Classic Collision and Restoration. I was having a hard time thinking of how I was going to top that. Once I saw your work, I know the only possibility was to make a “Happy Family Leopold” illustration become a reality. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent!

I don’t think I mentioned before, but, I am good friends with Jessica Pany. Her piece is what moved me to search you out and apply. I have been obsessed with her piece and imagining what the “Happy Family Leopold” piece would be for the past few months. Now that the “Happy Family Leopold” art exist outside of my imagination, it exceeds every expectation I had. Jessica and I spoke today and were just praising your talent.

You have given me and my family a truely priceless piece of art that reflects the very fiber of our family unit. I can’t thank you enough! I am moved to tears and beyond words. Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!

    you are amazing!
