My ‘Super’ Pedal Pusher

This past weekend was a big weekend at the Moon household. And it is the reason that I am giving away ANOTHER piece from the Pedal Pushers series rather than moving on to a new series.

We woke up on Saturday with no real agenda. When we finally got to planning our day, we decided on a family bike ride. HOW the bike ride would work was the topic of debate. Should Judah (our 3 1/2 year old) ride his Strider® balance bike and Finn ride in the bike trailer by himself, or should they both ride in the trailer?… Gee… we sure were wishing that Judah had his own “big boy pedal bike” so Finn could start riding the Strider®. We got to thinking that that sounded like the best plan of all.

So we headed out. First we decided to hit up some garage sales to see if we could find a toddler bike. That didn’t pay off in time or money. So we gave up on that and headed to a local sports store where Judah was fitted for the right size bike. We headed to one other store to compare prices, and ended up back at the first store.

We purchased Judah’s new toddler bike, had them remove the training wheels, and threw in a couple clearance Spiderman water bottles that would attach to their bikes.

Day 1 (Saturday): We practiced for less than an hour before it was nap time. A little bit longer after nap time and before supper time. And it went fairly well. It was clear that Judah had his balance down (having learned it on his balance bike), but he was not yet used to having pedals for his feet.

It was an exciting day, and even though he wasn’t riding on his own yet, all went to bed happy and content.

Day 2 (Sunday): We go to church on Sunday night, so our mornings are free. I got up early, got some work done. While I was getting work done, my husband made us all breakfast, then took the boys back outside to try their bikes. After about 15 minutes, Judah comes running inside and yells, “MOM! COME SEE WHAT I CAN DO!!” So I head outside, and lo and behold, he’s got it!!

With the help of his dad, he got onto his bike, and then pedaled off without him! My boy! At 3 1/2 years old! Riding a bike without training wheels or any help at all!

And with that first ride, I saw Judah’s “baby-hood” all but disappear!

And we’re so happy for him. Because he is so happy.

As Judah was pedaling his bike, and I was running along beside him in order to catch him in case he took a spill, I said to him, “Judah, mommy is going to call yo ‘Pedal Pusher Judah.’” (I was actually thinking about this illustration series!) And he corrected me and said, “No, how about ‘Super Pedal Pusher Judah.’”

Even better.

This giveaway, today, is dedicated to my ‘Super Pedal Pusher Judah’. He is, indeed, super. And I’m so proud of him!

Happy Tuesday Oohmoonies!!
