Age Old Athletics: Football
I’m still thinking about kids going back to school. The next couple of weeks will be based on school time themes. This week will be Athletics! Age old athletics to be exact. Ones that have been around a long time. Are there any requests for which sports you’d like to see? I have a few in mind, but they are always subject to change based on my beloved Oohmoonie’s preferences!
Today is obviously about football. I love to go to outdoor football games. Once there is a crisp chill in the air outside, and you can start to smell the leaves changing (even before they change), I get a craving for a football game. In the small town we grew up in, no one missed a football game on Friday or Saturday nights. I’m so excited that I have a great excuse to go to games again. My baby brother (though, not so much a baby anymore) just transferred colleges to play football for the local college here where we live! I’m so excited to start going to his games! And my husband and I are especially excited for the night his team plays our college alma mater! Yay! Can’t wait! The lights, the chill, the blankets on our laps, the food, the pomp, the band, the crowd… such fun!
Did any women here ever play football in younger days (at my school they called it “powder puff” football). Once every fall, the freshman and sophomore girls got to play the junior and senior girls on the high school football field. The football team guys were our refs. Oh my did we look forward to the night! And man did we have a blast!! There was no tackling (just touch), but it was a blast! I would think back on the game for weeks afterward! Seriously!
Awww… the olden days. My favorite cd to listen to in the fall is “October Road” by James Taylor! I LOVE this cd! For me it is like listening to Christmas music at Christmas time… once fall comes, James Taylor gets played. I mean, I believe it is my most listened to cd of all time! All time! The song, “September Grass” always makes me want to go to a football game! And both together… oh me oh my! They help make autumn autumn. LOVE! (Actually, I hated the cd when I first heard it! My boyfriend at the time started listening to it and I couldn’t stand it… but the more I heard it, the more I fell in love I guess.) What cd do you love this much?
Hope everyone had a good weekend!
Katie

The Rugby World Cup is on at the moment, so rugby would be appropriate. And of course what is more age-old than cricket? It’s a lovely game.
I would like to suggest Aussie Rules footy, since we’re in the finals and the Grand Final is fast approaching; but since there are probably only 3 of us who frequent this blog who even knows what that is, it’s probably not feasible! But it’s got a fascinating history and is roughly based on a game played by the indigenous people of what is now Melbourne. Can’t get more age-old than that!
Ooh! Thanks for the ideas!
ROLLER DERBY! It’s been around since the 1920′s and is having a huge hay day right now! I play and I would LOVE to see how you’d represent it!
Hmmm…. I hadn’t thought of that one! Thinking….
Swimming for us at our house since my husband and I both swam in college and New Orleans Saints football (my hometown). Both of our both root for the Saints and detest the Cowboys (we live in Dallas) – proves I’m doing something right
I think I’m going to love this series. I ran hurdles back in the day and would love to see some track and field!
We were a big swimming family. And basketball (Blue Devils!) I actually just found a series of photos of my grandfather (as an older child) with a soap box derby car that he had made…I printed it up and it’s in the bathroom waiting to be hung (as is the other car print you did.) I’m not sure if it was a school thing or not, but in the 30s – the Soap Box Derby was huge! He did grow up to play and then coach football and basketball…and baseball. and swimming. We’re a sports family. Ohh – and tennis. My mom and all her siblings played tennis.
Oh – it’s more spring, but I also have a picture of my grandfather playing baseball in a cornfield with his best friend. They’re both barefoot and if the picture weren’t obviously 70-80 years old, it could have been taken 7-8 months ago! I really should get those on flickr.
Awww…. I LOVE old photos! Especially of family looking or doing something fabulous!
oh, and to answer your other question – this is a recent album that’s in heavy rotation in our house: The Decemberists – The King is Dead. This isn’t the official video, but I love it (the song is Rocks in the Box) http://vimeo.com/24195442
As for timeless albums: Bookends by Simon and Garfunkle and Endless Summer by The Beach Boys. The latter one got played a LOT while I was unpacking after our movie. It helped with my mood
Ooh! I love S&G too! That beach boys album was one of the first cds I owned. Thanks for sharing the link… I’m listening right now.
I’d have to put in a request for volleyball! Love playing it in high school and still love playing today when I get the chance. There’s actually a group of us moms here in the area that get together once a week from January until Easter/Lent to play.
I also used to love going to baseball games. The best was when you had a friend with a pickup and could sit on the tailgate or on chairs in the back to watch the game thru the fence.
I’d love to see an illustration for tennis. My sister and I still battle it out on the court from time to time.
I agree with volleyball! Love it! I played in high school and have played for years with my husband in different leagues around our town. Now I’m coaching it!
Also, hockey and baseball.
Good ideas! Thanks!
I don’t know if you’ve heard of Cricket but its huge in India and all the commonwealth countries
