Roughin’ It: A Refreshing Dip
There’s nothing like taking a dip in a cool river, pond, or lake on a scorching summer day… especially if you’ve been sweatin’ it! I remember being a teenager and going on a backpacking trip with other kids my age. We hiked through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. The trip still brings back good memories. On the trip, we’d stop along rivers or streams to refill our water bottles. We’d pump the water through a small filter that would purify our water and pour it into our Nalgene® bottles. Oh man, the best part was how naturally icy cold it was when we were so tired and hot. At the end of the day, when we’d reach our camping destination—always near some sort of stream—we’d get to take off our hiking boots and socks and splash around in the water to cool off. I don’t remember jumping in like this on that particular trip (we were never near deep enough water), but I remember how refreshing it felt nonetheless. I think that’s what these kiddos are enjoying. Refreshment from the heat of the day and the work of the camp.
In your estimation, what’s the best refreshment from the heat?
