We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy Perfect Light

Introducing series #4: The Nativity

And to start you off in reverse chronological order according to the Biblical account, enter the wise men. As the week progresses, we’ll drawer nigher and nigher the birth of the Christ Child.

So here we have three very wise kings. They ride atop the most convenient of camels. She is royal, like they, and has three cargo compartments. How handy for three kings carrying three very precious (and nicely designed) gifts. And since they will be traveling west through “moor and mountain”, they are prepared for the worst kind of snow storm. Only men of such wisdom would have the foresight to to pack parkas, hats, and mittens for themselves, and boots and a scarf for their camel. Of course we all know, their foresight (and fashion sense) isn’t the only reason they are so wise. They were very wise to study astronomy and see a bright and brilliant star emerging in the western sky. They were also wise to realize it would lead the way to reveal a great King and Priest! What they risked in order to bring honor to such a babe as this!

By the way, did you know there’s no recording of exactly how many wise men there were?! Seriously! We know there were three gifts… but the Bible only says wise men brought them… not how many! Check it out:

Matthew 2:1, 9-11 ESV
2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem… 9 And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

And did you also know that the three gifts they brought were representative of the One to whom they brought them?! The rest of the song spells it our pretty clearly and concisely. It’s a cool factoid to know. Check it out:

Gift #1: Jesus’ royalty
Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Gift #2: Jesus’ diety
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Pray’r and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Gift #3: Jesus’ sacrifice
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Summing it up:
Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav’n replies

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

(We Three Kings, written in 1857 by Rev. John Henry Hopkins)

With that, I will leave you for today. May your week be filled with wonder as we take a look at each part of the first Christmas celebration.

Many blessings to you!
